Renewed range of coolant fluids
Our updated line of coolant fluids not only complies with the new European ECHA legislation but also offers the same trusted quality and performance you can rely on. As a result, our products are fully up-to-date and ready to support your needs for the coming years.
The role of coolant fluids?
The importance of coolant fluid in preserving your vehicle's performance and lifespan cannot be underestimated. However, only some know the crucial role of an obscure substance: 2-ethylhexanoic acid. This carboxylic acid has been a game changer in automotive cooling fluids, ensuring the engine runs smoothly under various conditions. But what is 2-ethylhexanoic acid, and how is it used in coolants?
What is 2-ethylhexanoic acid?
2-ethylhexanoic acid, often called 2-EHA, is a fatty acid significantly advanced in the automotive industry. It acts as a corrosion inhibitor, preventing rust and corrosion in the engine. This is vital, especially under extreme conditions with high corrosion risk. Additionally, it provides stability at high temperatures and works well with various materials used in engines.
Reclassification
Despite its beneficial properties, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) recently carried out a significant reclassification for 2-EHA and its salts. This reclassification, which occurred in December 2023, means that products containing ≥ 0.3% 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA), such as some coolant fluids, must now be reassessed as reproductive toxic category 1B. This classification change has several implications.
Impact
This new regulation requires all products containing ≥ 0.3% 2-EHA to display the hazard symbols GHS07 and GHS08 on the packaging. Furthermore, such products may no longer be sold to consumers and may not be offered in consumer packaging.
Revision of Coolants
In anticipation of the latest European ECHA legislation, we have also decided to stop selling hazardous classified products to professional users. We believe that what is not suitable for the consumer is not good for the professional user either. Therefore, Kroon-Oil has been actively seeking better solutions for both application and user safety. After completing this project, we are pleased to introduce a new Kroon-Oil Coolant line-up.
We have said goodbye to all products that fall within the new ECHA classification, such as the Coolant SP 12, Coolant SP 14, and Coolant SP 15. New successors have replaced these. Other products have received updates to comply with the latest standards. In all cases, we have ensured that our products meet the needs of our customers and are ready for the future.
In short, our renewed line of coolants complies with the new European ECHA legislation and offers the same trusted quality and performance that you can rely on. As a result, our products are completely up-to-date and ready to support your needs for the coming years.
Furthermore, Kroon-Oil remains committed to continuous improvement and innovation. We will continue to listen to our customers' needs and feedback to ensure that our products continue to meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and environmental considerations.
